THE NTNU BOARD
Here you will find some information about the NTNU board.
All universities in Norway have a university board. In NTNU’s case, we have an employed rector, which means that the rector is not the chairman of the board, nor is the rector in the board. The board’s task is described in the Universities and University Colleges Act (nor: Universitet og høyskoleloven) as the highest body at the institution. The board is responsible for ensuring that the professional activities are of high quality and that the institution is run efficiently and in accordance with the laws, regulations and rules that apply, and the frameworks and goals provided by the higher authority. All decisions at NTNU made by other actors than the board are made by delegation from the board and under the responsibility of the board. The board may delegate its decision-making authority to others at the institution to the extent that it does not go against the law that the board itself must make decisions, or there are other special restrictions on the right to delegate. The board shall decide the strategy for the institution’s educational and research activities and make plans for the professional development in accordance with the goals given by the overall authority for the University sector and the institution. The board employs the rector and vice-rectors, draws up strategies, sets goals and performance requirements and proposes a budget. In other words, the board is responsible for the ‘general instructions’ in NTNU’s activities, and lays down guidelines for how the organization is to be run. The Rector acts as NTNU’s CEO between board meetings, and reports to the board.
The board meets 9-10 times a year – the position is remunerated by the Department of education. Students are elected for the period August 1 – July 31.
Students who are elected to the board are also offered a full-time position in the Student Parliament’s leadergroup, which allow leave from studies for one year.
The board 2020-2021
NTNU’s board consists of eleven members. Four of these are external members, and seven are internal. The external board members have basically no affiliation with NTNU and therefore make valuable proposals to NTNU. The internal members are affiliated with NTNU. Three of these are scientific employees. One is from the technical-administrative staff, one is from the temporary scientific staff, and two are students.

Full time position in Studenttinget
The two students who are elected to the board are offered a full-time position in the Student Parliament’s (Studenttinget/STi) leader group, so that they can take a years leave from their studies while being a member of the board and work full time with student politics and board work. They get an office at the Student Parliament at Oppredningen, Gløshaugen, Trondheim. The Student Parliament (STi) is the highest body for students at NTNU.
STi discusses political cases at the university and makes decisions on behalf of NTNU’s 42,000 students and finds what the students think about issues. STi meets once a month. Every year, Studenttinget elects a working committee (AU) that works full time to formulate issues and policies for STi, and perform and promote STi’s political decisions towards NTNU. If a student-elected board member accepts the position in the Student Parliament, they will be part of the Student Parliament’s leader group, and will collaborate with AU on a daily basis on e.g. Studenttinget’s daily operations, policy formulation, representation and follow-up of the eight student councils at NTNU.
The board position is remunerated/paid by KD corresponding to approx. a 40% position.
Studenttinget’s leader group position is paid correspondingly approx. 60% such as to constituting 100% position for one year.
